2007 Speaking Tour
November 4 - 9, 2007
From November 4 - 9, 2007, GHRC welcomed human rights activist Ruth del Valle
Cóbar from the Movimiento Nacional de los Derechos Humanos to the US for a speaking tour about violence against human rights defenders in Guatemala.
Ruth has worked tirelessly to promote human rights, raise awareness about the increasing attacks against human rights defenders and organizations, and improve the rule of law and democratic institutions in Guatemala. She is the cofounder of the Movimiento Nacional por los Derechos Humanos (National Movement for Human Rights – MNDH), a network for dozens of human rights institutions, and she spearheads the Unidad de Protección a Defensores y Defensoras de los Derechos Humanos (Human Rights Defenders Protection Unit – UPDDH). Due to her efforts, she has suffered acts of intimidation and her office was raided and looted in February 2007.
Ruth spoke with 350 people through twenty-five activities in and around Boston, MA as well as the Washington, DC area. She met with US Senators, Congressional Representatives, church groups, universities, human rights organizations, and Guatemala solidarity groups. She also conducted radio interviews with BBC World Today and SPC Noticias.
